Our offices were abuzz late last year with everyone guessing what the 2013 Pantone Colour of the Year would be. Purple and indigo were hot favourites. But when Pantone named emerald green, it made perfect sense. Green is the colour of balance and harmony. It’s associated with nature and has come to symbolise health, growth and vitality. With qualities like this it’s sure to be a big hit this year, which is why we’re celebrating the brightness and bling of all things emerald on page 26.
Welcome to the Colour of Emotion issue – a look at how colour and paint can change how a room looks and how it makes you feel. Red is generally energising, orange is stimulating, blue is calming and also pain-relieving. By getting to know these almost magical effects, we can use colour strategically to create happier and more harmonious homes. Find out how to do this in our colour psychology story on page 57. Then be inspired by the use of colour in four kids’ bedrooms (page 48), the trendiest jewel tones (page 8) and the new Johannesburg home and shop of fashion duo Malcolm Klûk and Christiaan Gabriel du Toit (page 36).
That’s what this issue of SPACES is all about – helping you transform your home with the colours that are right for you. Sometimes just a small splash of colour makes all the difference – see how we brightened up trims from skirtings and doorframes to a fireplace and staircase on page 87.
But whatever you do, keep exploring the joy of colour. Visit www.plasconspaces.co.za for more ideas and to subscribe to our monthly newsletter. And for regular updates see the Plascon Trendsblog.
Colourful wishes!

I love travelling to new places and paying special attention to colours, architecture and design.
So when my son took part in a surfing competition in the Canary Islands earlier this year, I managed to convince him that it would be a great idea if I went along too.
As Lanzerote is a volcanic island that hardly ever gets any rain, the first thing I noticed was the lack of grass – although the islanders make up for it with emerald-painted doors and windows on the mostly white-painted houses. The hotel I stayed at had eight swimming pools – all for the English tourists that come to the island to enjoy the sun and the luxury of swimming in a pool every day.
All of this reminded me of just how lucky we are to live in South Africa. We get to enjoy the exquisite countryside and weather, not to mention a multitude of colours and designs – a fact that was reinforced when I came back from holiday and went through the latest layouts for Plascon SPACES magazine.
Welcome to the Inside-Out Issue – a visual feast of summer’s best indoor and outdoor looks. You can lounge on one of our four fab patios on page 60 or dip into the gorgeous indigo and ombre trend on page 22. From the African bush-inspired colours of The Olive Exclusive hotel on page 40 to the ocean-side style in the beach house on page 32, we have such beauty, originality and aesthetic flair close to home.
For me, 2013 is going to be a year of stepping outside and seeing even more. And the Plascon SPACES team will continue to showcase the gems we find along the way. You can do the same by sending us your paint questions and home project pics.
Here’s to a wonderful, colourful new year.

This is a very special issue of Plascon SPACES magazine. Why? Because it’s the launch issue for the 2013 Colour Forecast – the culmination of a year of sourcing and scouting to find out which colours are making themselves seen and heard.
There has been no shortage of inspiration, thanks to international fashion weeks, the Olympics, pop culture, TV dramas like Downton Abbey (my personal favourite) and movies like The Great Gatsby. Due for release on Christmas Day, this much-anticipated film has already sparked a penchant for pastels, Art Deco designs and anything that sparkles. For more information on trends, please check out our new trends blog, www.plascontrends.co.za.
Colour trends are also influenced by the mood of society – we are drawn to colours that reflect how we feel. When stressed, we gravitate towards soft greens and blues, and when we need a little motivation, we turn to red. Right
now, society is craving stability. A haven of balance and harmony. Pick up any newspaper and you’ll soon find out why: uprisings, natural disasters, yet another rhino poached, the list goes on.
That’s why the theme for the Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast is balance. It consists of four palettes designed to help you bring harmony into your home, be it through calm colours to counter the chaos, or through energetic shades that can blast away blandness and give low spirits a lift. You’ll find all the themes and colours in the brochure with this issue, as well as loads of ideas on how to personalise the palettes in the pages of the magazine.
We hope that these colours will help you create a haven of harmony that’s perfect for you. Enjoy!

The thing I love most about working with paint and colour is that I’m constantly inspired by what can be achieved with a bit of imagination. After many years in the business I’m still in awe of colours that are used in unusual and exciting ways. The sky truly is the limit. And you need look no further than Plascon SPACES magazine to get your imagination flying higher than ever before.
In this issue we show you how to take something that inspires you and adapt it to your space. In “A sensual season” on page 12, see how stylist Tina-Marié Malherbe takes a simple fig as a colour inspiration and interprets its tones into a space. From nature we move to the runway in “Fashion becomes feature” on page 83 – four haute couture trends are used as springboards for four stunning feature walls.
In the spirit of inspiration, if you have a chance to visit Decorex Durban or Cape Town, be sure to visit the Plascon stand to see how a selection of South Africa’s top designers translate the colours and themes of the Plascon 2012 Colour Forecast into their own unique looks. You’ll find more about Decorex and the designers involved on page 39.
Lastly, if you’re thinking of painting your living room, but need some fresh ideas, you’ll love “One Room Four Looks” on page 62. This inspiring feature shows how different colour schemes – from neutral gold through dark denim blue to bright orange – can transform a space.
Remember to keep sending us your paint questions and colourful thoughts. We love hearing from you, so get in touch at plasconspaces.co.za, or contact me on Twitter @anneroselt.

Your full-colour summer starts here!
It’s been a pretty exciting couple of months with so much happening in the world of fashion and design. My annual trip to London was perfectly timed for a visit to 100% Design and Decorex, both of which gave me a shot of extra inspiration.
I was wowed by the entrance to 100% Design, and especially impressed by some of the products on display. Stand-outs included the electrically conductive paint by Bare Conductive (if only this could solve the cable theft problem for Eskom and Telkom) as well as the sustainable, reusable and colourful No News is Good News seating made from stacks of old newspapers by Suzie Button, winner in the New Designers category.
The lighting at these shows never ceases to amaze me, and this time was no exception – from the black and white bird-shaped lights by Atelier Areti and the bright cotton reel-like creations by Design Virus at the Korea Design exhibition, to the gorgeous Endesigns crystal bars that appeared to turn to gold when switched on.
Decorex also featured some incredible designers who are drawing inspiration from an array sources. As expected, Andrew Martin’s stand was a hit with magnificent ice sculptures at the entrance and a display of his Autumn 2011 collection, including a Navaho-inspired red velvet couch. From these to Harlequin’s enchanting vintage country florals, there was something for everyone to see and savour.
Having done the shows I couldn’t leave London without visiting Designers Guild and The Conran Shop, where I fell in love with a multi-coloured couch. With feet taking strain I tried the tube, but felt I was missing out on too much under ground. So walk and walk I did, dragging my sister along too – another pair of eyes will always draw your attention to some beautiful things you might have otherwise missed.
That’s why we’re inviting your eyes to take in the beautiful things in this issue of Plascon SPACES magazine. There’s something here for everyone too, from Grecian blues and whites to gentle greys and a selection of bold brights in a Johannesburg artist’s home. We’ve also got four festive dining-room looks for a stylish summer celebration. All it takes is a little paint and a lot of inspiration.
Here’s to a happy, colourful new year.

Touching, tasting, smelling, listening and seeing are how we interpret what’s happening in the world around us – and personally my senses have been in overdrive this year, both during my travels and while working on Plascon’s 2012 Colour Forecast.
The pages that follow in this 5th issue of Plascon SPACES feature the 32 trendy colours and four palettes of the 2012 Forecast: Memory, Expression, Mystery and Origins. Plus they’re explored further in the handy brochure included with the mag.
The colour palettes for 2012 are easy to use and easy on the eye – without compromising substance and soul. As in the worlds of fashion and décor, colour in the home can go from outrageous to classical – and these palettes allow for exactly that. We hope you enjoy them and that they inspire you to bring some colour into your life, in whatever way suits you best. That’s why we call them Endless Possibility. See more here.
I recently visited a magnificent home in the process of being painted by decorative artist Charlie Vettori. Despite the size of this house, Charlie’s carefully chosen colours have created a cosy, inviting and intriguing atmosphere using colour, making it perfect for the family living there.
But, if the idea of experimenting with paint and colour still feels a little scary, help is on-hand at the brand-new Plascon Spaces Showroom in Johannesburg. Here colour consultants will take you through the planning and paint-choosing process, showing you exactly how your home or room will look before you even pick up a brush. Visit this exciting space in the Design Quarter, Fourways or email them a photo of the space you want revamped at concept@plascon.co.za.

Being in the décor business we get to see a lot of beautiful spaces, but every now and then a real treasure comes along. That is exactly what happened when we were working on this issue and Tina-Marié Malherbe discovered a gem of an apartment in Cape Town. There really can be no better testament to the power of paint than the transformation of this upmarket apartment – originally done in neutral tones of grey, beige and white – into a kaleidoscope of happy colour. Feast your eyes and find out how designer Alison Reynolds put it together on page 36.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to go to Los Angeles to attend a colour conference by Leatrice Eiseman. She is a well-known author and colour expert, as well as the Director of the Pantone Color Institute. Leatrice is also responsible for the Pantone colour forecasts and had just named Honeysuckle pink as the colour of the year for 2011. Pink is popping up everywhere right now – you can see more of it on our Trends pages and learn how to introduce pink into your home in ‘Strawberry Pops’, our décor inspiration story on page 8. Talking of pink – ever considered a pink bathroom? It’s one of the four bathroom colour themes that we showcase in ‘One room, four looks’. Then there’s our bonus pull-out section, which has great ideas for bedrooms that will ensure sweet dreams, not only for tiny tots but for teens and adults, too.
Change it. Love it.

I got a good dose of inspiration recently when I attended two international events. I've often dreamed of visiting the Maison & Objet Exhibition in Paris, and this was my lucky year. I'd been forewarned about the scale of the exhibition (and studying the vast floor plan on their website confirmed this) but I was still blown away by the size of it when I got there. There are eight huge exhibition halls - I headed straight to Hall Seven which showcased interiors as well as the latest trends. Stands by the likes of Kenzo, Ralph Lauren and Andrew Martin (as well as many others I had never heard of, but am sure to hear of in the future) were amazing - some the size of a house.
I spent a good few hours here and then whizzed through the others, suffering from information overload but not wanting to miss out on anything. You really need two to three days to see the show properly. Visit www.maison-objet.com for more information on this fabulous exhibition.
And then, each year in October, I head to the International Colour Authority meeting in London. I am on the Interiors panel that is working on the colours for 2012. It was a fantastic experience to work with people from all over the world in various fields, from fashion to fine art and textile design, and it was such a privilege to participate in choosing the exciting colours forecasted for 2012. Read more on the ICA and get its forecast at www.internationalcolourauthority.org.
My wish is that this issue of Plascon Spaces will provide you with a good dose of inspiration. We have lots of it between these covers - from the lovingly-painted home of decorative artist Charlie Vettori to the makeover of a tumble-down, inner-city hotel into the exceptional creative hub that is now Freeworld Coatings. We've also shown you how a kitchen can be transformed by a simple lick of Plascon paint, and our pull-out section is packed with ideas from four designers on how to bring script into your home - a big decor trend right now and so easy to do.
Change it. Love it.
